Problem is, if you want your project to be more than your hobby, you have to maintain public interest somehow. Often they’re not coding for code’s sake, but to give themselves features and functionality. Remember also that quite a bit of Free Software is written by people who actually use it. This can be frustrating to non-programmers (or, better put, people who have no interest in learning programming), but at the same time, it’s liberating for everyone else. Developers do what they’re interested in (or what they’re good at) and it doesn’t necessarily matter if “interest is alive”. One of the frustrating and beautiful attributes of Free Software is the fact that it doesn’t particularly matter if there’s interest in the project… especially if you only have a few dedicated developers. I’ve seen more than enough open-source projects where the programmers put priority on the code itself, rather than the job it’s intended to do.īottom line is, when people look at GIMP, they expect a free Photoshop. Cinepaint may not be as elegant as a GEGL implementation, but it certainly did the job it was intended for, and in a timely manner. I still think single window mode was somewhat of a PR move to get people interested again.Ībout high bit depth - sometimes a bandaid solution is needed if you want to keep interest alive. Despite being a massively requested feature, it was only when GIMP started falling into the ravine of obscurity did they do something about it. If the GIMP developers really cared about single window mode they would have implemented it many years ago. ![]() Yes, but isn’t it ideologies that drive those priorities? Why else would the MyPaint developers willingly avoid selection tools in favor of quirky features like symmetric brushes. They just took longer because the GIMP devs prioritized other things higher or (in the case of higher bit depth) wanted a more comprehensive solution (e.g. Lack of personnel also forces prioritization… single window mode is here and high bit depth support is coming.
